Our organisation Akaal Sikh Society Launceston Incorporated stems from the ongoing devotion of the first Sikh family arrived and settled in Tasmania- Kulwant Singh Dhillon and his wife Mahinder Kaur Dhillon who migrated to Tasmania in August 1969. The couple always had their door open to anyone needing emotional and spiritual support in addition to encouraging positive community interactions and friendships. With time, such encouraging approach motivated the Sikh community to come to Dhillon’s residence for prayer and meditation.
Sikh community grew slowly and needed a place to come together for worship, community celebrations and cultural rituals. Kulwant Singh and Mahinder Kaur decided to hold monthly prayers at their residence in Grindelwald back in 2009. This initiative was received well by the community and overtime, the prayers frequency was increased to weekly. In addition to prayers, a weekly class to teach Punjabi language to our young generation has been facilitated as Punjabi is the mother tongue of most Sikhs. Weekly class of Classical Sikh music has also been held.
Sikh community is being increasingly recognised for their commitment and support to not just their own community members but for supporting the wider Australian community of Tasmania and all over Australia. Sikh Sangat (community) decided to formalise our organisation named Akaal Sikh Society Launceston Incorporated in 2020.
